To further Athaliah and Jezebel’s strategies, she is forced to marry Yahweh’s high priest and enters the unfamiliar world of Yahweh’s temple. My Review of this Book

I was curious about the title of this book. Who would WANT to live in the Shadow of Jezebel? Well, this book draws a picture of what it might have been like to have lived in the shadow of one of the Bible’s most adversarial women, Jezebel. While the bulk of the story does not focus on her, Mesu Andrews did an amazing job describing events that actually occurred in I Chronicles and II Kings. Good vs. evil is described in the opposition of Yahweh’s priesthood to the occultic and barbaric worship of foreign gods. While Jezebel is notorious for her evil behavior, CAN you even imagine being raised by her?  It is clear in Scripture that her daughter, Athaliah, followed closely in her footsteps and that is where this novel takes place.  Athaliah, like her mother, was instrumental in bringing idol worship to God’s people, and in leading kings to destructive choices.  While we don’t know the exact nature of Athaliah’s relationship with Jehosheba, it is not too hard to consider that she tried to have a similar effect in relationship to the sister of the king.  I was moved by Jehosheba’s struggle against her family’s idol worship, and the development of her relationship with God’s High Priest, and eventually God Himself.  I really enjoy the overarching story of redemption that is woven throughout this novel.  Reading about Jehosheba, her priest husband, Jehoida, and their battle against a brutal, addictive worship and the queens who led nations to destruction really has left me thinking and praying about my influence on my own family. One of the first things I did when I finished the novel, was to go back into my Old Testament and review the Scriptural accounts.  I have to say that Mesu’s effort to write accurately while crafting a fictional story is one of my favorite features of her books! This story was very well-written, and as I read the Scripture accounts, I could point back to parts of the story I had just finished reading.  This is a great read and I hope you will look for it to add to your own library collection!  I give it 5 out of 5 stars!!!

Great review, Debbie. I’ve read more about the barbaric practices around the worship of Baal Melqart and you’re right, it was horrible.

I did a little research, too, but it was pretty disturbing so I stopped! I think Mesu was thorough in explaining parts of the horror of this particular idol worship without being traumatic!
